Must Have's For Bare boat Chartering in the Leeward Islands

This is our list that we would recommend to future bare boaters. This is not a definitive list - nor is it complete. It is what we found out on our recent charter that started in St Maarten. Please simply take this as advise!

  • Bring a cooler full of meat - if you can. Use some dry ice - it lasts 2 days. Place the meat at the bottom of the cool box on your boat (ensure there is one!)
  • Vacuum sealed meat works best - our steaks lasted 11 days Chicken should be eaten first.
  • Bring your home favourites - if you have the high weight allowance bring FOOD! Bring ketchup, sauce in paper packages, herbs, spices, etc
  • Women - bring bathing suits, wraps, sundresses. This is all you need! shorts get hot, long pants - you wont wear them. Bring a light pair of Capri's if you wish to wear longer pants. My advise - lots of bathing suits and lots of wraps. Bring feminine hygiene products 'cause you just don't know when the stores are open, or whether they carry your needs.
  • Lip balm, aloe gel, lotion, sun screen, sun hat - all necessary.
  • Polarised sun glasses - very important!
  • Men - swim shorts & t-shirts. A nice pair of shorts for outings... leave the long pants and jeans at home.
  • Gravol, pain killers, meat tenderiser for sea urchin and jellyfish stings (make a paste with water and apply)
  • Green olives help with sea sickness for some people
  • A fishing pole and a holder for the boat. It is nice to catch fresh fish as you sail between the islands. Rods and tackle are very difficult to find - bring with you if you can. A short "tuna stick" was our rod of choice - with a pink feather lure.
  • Bring a good knife for use on the boat and for the fish you will catch with your "tuna stick"
  • Lots of tin foil for the BBQ
  • Zip-locked bags (2 sizes large and small) zip-locked containers
  • Lighters & Matches
  • Hurricane candle for evenings (lights on the boat are annoyingly bright!)
  • Mosquito coils and repellent

More to come....
